Premise[]

Juliette bites off more than she can chew ahead of her big night, while Cal feels a knot of unease as her family prepares for a risky vampire hunt.

Summary[]

The episode starts with Calliope dreaming about a peach tree and a snake. She has an inner monologue and questions what her father has taught her. She suddenly meets Juliette, who says they're in Eden. She continues, saying that she didn't know biting her would connect them like it did. Cal says her feeling confuse her, and Juliette reasuers her and says anything is possible in there. She picks a peach from the tree and approaches Cal to kiss her, but a snake slithers around her. Cal notices and jumps back as a sword appears in her hand. Juliette freezes and breathes faster, yelling for her to run. The snake lunges at her and Cal wakes up. Her father knocks on her bedroom door, telling her the whole family is outside.

The Burns and Franklins are watching Apollo and Theo sparring as the adults comments on their moves. Jack remarks that keeping a distance is good since if legacy blood touches your skin it'll instantly paralyze. When Apollo manages to kick Theo in the face, Mike comments that he's bragging, while Sarah tells Theo he's telegraphing. After Apollo taunts him, Apollo lunges but Theo manages to get an axe to his neck. After taunting him again about sending him instead of Theo to the guild, Jack attacks him from behind and telling him he's too impressed by himself which is the worst thing a hunter can be. His mother joins in, commenting that he's too reckless. His parents tell him that he's on lookout duty, which upsets him.

Jack proclaims that Cal and Tess are next, and they start sparring with hand-to-hand combat. Cal taunts her, then easily beats her to Jack's delight. Mike comments to Sarah that she's guild material.

Meanwhile Juliette is looking through her drawers for her pills, and when she can't find them she gets an episode where her teeth come out and her eyes start to bleed. She walks downstairs where Elinor is making tea and listening to a news segment from WSAV3 on her phone, talking about Ashley Stantson's funeral that day. Juliette asks for her pills and Elinor tells her to calm down as she doesn't need them anymore, unless she's been lying. Juliette interrupts her by shouting please, and she gives in. After handing her the pills, she tells her they won't solve her problems. She says she tossed the rest as a motivation to do the right thing. Jules tries to argue, saying that its a stupid tradition and that Olived never had to do it, but Elinor shuts her down. She remarks that her teeth are cute and that she should put them away before "the big fitting".

Margot and Elinor watch as Juliette try on dresses. After a few dresses they don't like, Margot asks her to at least try to be happy as they're doing it for her, and Jules tells her she wishes it would be less creepy and with people she actually knew. Davina, Jules grandmother, enters the room. Margot is uncomfortable but Elinor gets up to fondly greet her. Davina comments that the dress looks awful on her, and Jules agrees with a backhanded comment to her mother. After Davina comments that it was her dress, she pokes at Margot that Jules lack of respect comes from her father, a non-legacy vampire. Before Jules can apologize, Davina comments on the importance of their legacy as Keeper of the Emerald Malkia. But before she can finish, Ben honks and she runs outside.

Juliette is first annoyed with Ben's impatience, and he mocks her dress asking why he's not invited to the masquerade. Jules says its just a dinner, but Ben questions her after seeing a flower delivery van. He invokes "Admit and Forget", where Jules admits that her parents are having a party and that he's not invited. He forgives her and ask if she's coming to Ashley's parents to pay respects, which she says she can't because death freaks her out (and she has her family party). When he says he thinks Ashley was murdered, Jules tries to say he was traumatised because he found her. She tries to end the conversation by saying its hot and he's talking nonsense. He gets upset and gets in his car. Jules tries to invoke "Admit and forget", but he only admits that he hates her right now as he drives away.

At the Burns residence, Cal is kicking a hanging punching bag and doing jump-ropes while Talia and Jack are watching her from the kitchen. Jack hugs Talia from behind says Cal's intensity reminds him of her, and Talia responds that she's been at it for a few hours. He says she's improved greatly with Talias and her's training sessions. Talia says she's only 16. Jack says Theo was 12 and Apollo 14, but she responds that she was 15 when the wraith almost killed her. They argue about if the Guild order to kill the legacies are a blessing or a curse, considering they don't know how to kill a legacy but that its a great opportunity for them. Talia doesn't want Cal to join since she's too young and its her first hunt, but Jack argues that they sent their best friends (referring to the Franklins), its not her first hunt and she's the first hunter to survive a legacy in 400 years and that she deserves a chance to finish it. After some back and fourth about what family means to them, Talia says he needs to respect her feelings after which he apologizes. She then jokingly says he needs to get out of the kitchen unless he wants to cook, and they kiss.

At the fairmonts estate, Jules is reading about the history of the legacy vampires. On one side is a picture of two naked women standing in front of a tree with one woman constricted by a snake. The book reads:

"In the beginning was the garden

and in the garden were two sisters, born from

soil, raised by the sun and the moon. They were

named Eve and Lilith. For a time, they lived, and

grew, and knew nothing of the world beyond the

garden walls. One night they lay beneath the ...

of life, and when they woke, they were visited by

the Emerald Malika, first of all beasts, blessed

by the tree of life forever. This was the serpent,

and the fruit, for it offered them knowledge, and

power both, and in exchange asked only for...

of their blood. Eve was a coward, and she...

the Malkia's offer, but her sister...

shied from nothing. And so...

but Lilith embraced it...

the Emerald Malk...

as it had been...

Never.."

Elinor enters and quotes the book "And so Eve fled the serpent while Lilith embraced its bit", asking if she's brushing up on their history. Jules hesitates then asks if the snake will really bite her. Elinor replies that it only will if she's commited her first kill. Jules replies with a "huh". Elinor reiterates the problems it will bring if it rejects her, not only humiliation but the anarchy and battle over who gets control the mother serpent. She asks her to come with, since she has a surprise.

At the Burns's house, Mike is playing domino with Cal and Theseus while Jack is cooking on the BBQ, Sarah and Tess is setting the table, Talia is in the kitchen and Apollo is sharpening a knife. Mike tells them that after he was promoted from blade to helm, he was finally allowed to hunt the monster that made him become a hunter in the first place, a kitsune. They can take any shape of the thing they kill and it killed his brother. When he says it took him years to track it down, Sarah butts in that it took 15 months. Apollo asks what happened when he found it, but he says he didn't - it found him wearing his brother's face. He's saying this because he knows how hard it is to kill a monster that looks and feels human. He jokes with Cal before putting down the winning tile and they all laugh. Jack holds a toast, and says that their mission in Savannah was to figure out why the monsters are back. He says hunters aren't easily chocked, but that Cal did when she took initiative and single handedly led them to legacies. That they might get promoted if they win, and then Talia chimes in that they've decided that Cal will join the hunt. Jack and Cal looks suprised while the others congratulate her. Talia says she'll have the honor of killing Juliette, which stuns her.

Theo and Apollo bring a box of fine spears, and Sarah says there's only one Guild record of a legacy killing. The six spears are forged from the silver stake that hunter used. She hands a spear to Talia and Mike says he never thought they'd get a chance to use them thanks to Cal. Cal tries to retreat but Tess joins her, telling her its okay to be nervous. Cal hesitates confides in her, asking if she thinks maybe they're not all monsters inside. That they must see the them (hunters) as the monsters. Tess says they don't feel or love, and that she just needs experience to figure that out. Cal says she's probably right, but Tess looks concerned.

At a restaurant 'The Olde Pink House - Restaurant & Tavern', Jules asks what they're doing there. Elinor responds its to save her from herself. A woman in a green dress, Eve, enters and greets them. Elinor gets up and Eve asks if they're not having lunch but Elinor says "in a bit" and urges Jules to follow. They leave and walk together in the rain, Eve still noting that she's hungry. Elinor says she's playing Eve in the night's legacy hunt, but that they can find a replacement so she should drink up. Jules asks if she wants her to bite her. Eve gets in the car and Elinor says Jules needs to drain her and that their grandmother will shun her if she finds out she's weak. Jules replies that she's not weak for not being a killer, and Elinor thanks her for finally telling her the truth. Jules sighs and says she really tried. Elinor mocks her, saying she's got a crush which she doesn't contest. She asks what Jules' plan is, and Jules doesn't have a reply. Elinor reiterates the great things about being a legacy (seeing their reflection in the mirror, spending time in daylight, eat human food and not get ill) and begs her to appreciate what she is. Jules says she doesn't understand and Elinor sighs, handing cash to Eve and letting her go.

At night, the Franklins and Burns are gathering in the basement. Apollo and Theo are sparring while Jack is talking to Cal over a table with pistols, knives, flashlights, sunglasses and the silver spears when Mike enters. He hands her a spear, saying he remembers when Mike killed a banshee with a wrench. He says it was a lucky shot and asks to talk to Jack in private. They walk to the side and Mike says Cal can't join the hunt. Jack ask where its coming from, and Mike says its from him with the Guild's blessing.

Mike calls everyone and says Tess told him that Cal has doubts about killing vamps. Cal looks surprised at Tess, who first avoids her gaze but then further says that she implied they're just as bad as the monsters they hunt. Talia holds up a finger to stop Apollo who was about to deny it, and asks Cal to confirm. Cal looks around the room and Mike says Tess wouldn't lie. Cal confesses, but says it wasn't like that. Sarah looks at Cal as she scratches her neck and says she was bitten. Jack says he would know if she was bitten, but Sarah says legacy bites disappear, but itch, and they can alter the mind. Cal says she would never go against her family, which her brothers agree on, but Mike says they can't take chances since all the legacies will be in one place and its a once in a lifetime opportunity. Sarah says she's sorry and that the guild will send someone to watch Cal. The franklins leave, and Cal and Tess exchange dirty looks.

At the Fairmonts house, glasses of blood is being served and a quartet of violins are playing. Margot reassuers her mother, who leaves and holds a toast. She says that another woman of the Atwood family is going to bond with the Malkia and how honored they are. She asks who will present Juliette Anastasia Atwood at the legacy concecration, and her parents look at each other. Margot says "we will". Sebastian says Juliette will take her rightful place and adds Fairmont to her list of last names, which Davina conveniently left out.

Jules is in her room, in a robe, trying to call Ben but it goes to voicemail. She gets an episode as Elinor enters and hands her a glass of blood. She refuses but Elinor says she's out of options. Jules says she's going to tell the truth. Elinor says she needs to drink before her instincts take over and she kills the nearest person, noting that it could be Ben. Jules looks scared and drinks the glass. Elinor says they'll figure it out together and tells her to stall the party as long as she can. Jules agrees.

Downstairs, Davina exclaims its time to walk through the garden as Jules nervously waits on the top floor. A clapping behind her makes her turn around, and its Oliver (her brother) who says she "looks who's all grown up".

Meanwhile, the hunters are preparing their gear while Jack and Talia talk to Cal. Talia is upset with her, and Jack asks if there's anything else she wants to tell them. We get a quick flashback to her dream in the beginning of the episode, but before she can say anything she's interrupted by Mike and Clayton Cook who enter the house. Cal says no. Jack says he's sorry for what they're about to do, and Talia exclaims that all legacies, including Juliette, are going to die. Clayton asks Cal what they're going to watch during the evening while the others go out to hunt. She pleads one last time to her dad, but he says its done.

Back at the Fairmonts, Oliver walks Juliette down the stairs and asks her if she's having cold feet. He says the legacy stuff is nonsense and that she's not like them before greeting his parents who look very upset. Jules asks why he came, and he says "for you". Sebastian takes her arm as Margot pull Oliver to the side, telling him to leave. They argue and Oliver says he's staying.

Back with Cal, Clayton asks her if she's worried about her family or her vamp girlfriend. Cal doesn't reply. Clayton shows his arm with ~43 marks, saying his first one was 20 years ago. He tries to scare her but she says her brothers have done that trick on her since she was 2. Clayton taunts her, telling her that he would get promoted if he brought her to the Guild for attacking her. Cal gets up and pushes him away. He laughs and comes at her but she kicks him in the groin and out of the house. Just as she exits, she's knocked unconscious by an unknown person and dragged away.

Margot is in the bathroom and Jules comes in. She asks if they can talk, but Margot denies it and tries to walk away. Jules says its not her place which makes Margot turn around. She says its not what she wants and that she's sorry for ruining everything but wants her mom to call it off. Margot steels herself and says she's the one who ruined it. That she has three sisters that Jules only met once because she ran away with her "human plaything" (Sebastian). They all have children she's never met and she's not invited to family events because she refused to marry Henry Davenport. She ran away on her wedding day and hasn't had a relationship with them since. They only came to Elinor's ceremony because Davina made them, but they were allowed to not come to Jules'. They don't like her or that she is the keeper in waiting. Jules says she doesn't deserve to be treated like that and Margot says neither does she. But she will have to do her first kill or she'll get sick. Jules is surprised that knew, and Margot says they wouldn't be standing there if she had. If she had done the hard part, the ceremony is the easy part. Margot says she can tell them with her father, but Jules says she wants to. She then hugs her mom, who is unsure how to react, and says its going to be allright. Margot leaves and Jules gets a text from Elinor saying to meet her at the pond in 5min.

Outside, Davina is holding a speech about the origin of the ceremony while the guests listen. Sebastian asks where Jules is and Margot says she's going to get her. Sebastian watches her leave and meets Oliver's gaze. Oliver gives a vampire-toothy smile and Sebastian looks away. Oliver leaves. Davina finishes her speech, opens a chest and grabs a snake, showing it to the guests. She says that once the Malkia has bitten her, they'll release Eve (who is standing in a cage, waving), and hunt her. She points to the red carpet, asking Juliette to come forth, but there's noone there.

Jules enters the garden where Elinor grabs her. She says they need to get back, but Elinor says they need to hurry as she drags her along. Jules says she smells blood, then stops dead in her tracks as she notices Cal tied to a tree. Jules calls out and begins to untie her, and Elinor says she found her though Jules' phone. Jules says she already told their mom the truth, but Elinor says she won't loose her legacy status because of her. She urges Jules to drain Cal and pushes her towards Cal, saying this is the way as she cuts Cal and makes Jules smell her blood.

Oliver interrupts them and Elinor lets Jules go to face him. She says Prague wasn't far enough and that they should've put him in a silver box at the bottom of the ocean. Oliver turns to Jules, saying she doesn't have to live that life and that he's proof. Jules tries to wake and release Cal, clearly bothered by smelling her blood. Olives says he's taking away Jules, then Elinor lunges at him. He pushes her away and cuts Cal's ropes, but Elinor gets up and they start to fight.

Cal wakes up, but tells Jules to run. Just then, the Burn's start their attack. Jack says to hit the sound blast and they run to turn on what looks like speakers. Cal tells Jules to run again but she is paralyzed, holding her ears in pain. The guests scatter as sound blasts go on and the hunters attack.

Cal runs away, followed by Jules and her siblings. Jules stop, unsure if she's going to follow Cal, monologing that some decisions you just know in your gut what the right thing to do is. Elinor calls out to Jules just before the episode ends.

Trivia[]

When Juliette is reading, there's an image of a butterfly behind her. In 2018, a pest species of butterfly Ricania Simulans 'Vampire Butterfly' was reportedly originating from Georgia where the show is happening. They're called that because they suck the water from the water out of plants.[1]
